The New South Wales Local Government and Shires Association is holding an inquiry into the conduct of the 2004 Local Government State Electoral Office elections held on 27th March. Secretary General of the Association, Bill Gillooly, said the inquiry was prompted after it had received poor feedback from many Councils and candidates about problems with the 2004 elections.
The problems centred on defining ‘how to vote’ material; delays in processing votes; and conflicting advice.
The Associations will gather information from Mayors across the State through a letter being sent to each Council and then approach the Minister. Previously, the Shires Association has moved to have the running of Local Government elections returned to individual Councils. Both Associations will be seeking meetings with NSW Local Government Minister, Tony Kelly, to discuss their concerns.
When contacted in April, a spokesperson for the State Electoral Office – NSW said they had not heard about the inquiry.
