Personal development plan for everyone

Linking the personal development plans of staff to the broader objectives of a Local Government is no mean feat. To bridge this organisational gap, Adelaide City Council has introduced a personal development plan process that meets the needs of all employees, while improving their understanding of their role and function within the Council.

Team Leader Organisational Development, Samantha Riddle, said the plan achieves this aim by translating corporate goals into individual and team performance expectations and then identifying training and development needs.

“This project improves organisational performance by instilling the plans as part of the corporate culture and ensuring clearer links for employees between their individual and teams plans and the achievement of corporate goals and business plans,” Samantha Riddle said. “Improving employees’ understanding of their work and the performance required by setting realistic individual goals aligned to the corporate, divisional and business unit goals assists in improving overall organisational performance.”

Through this project employees are now provided with feedback and recognition for their performance. The plan has also assisted in improving communications between managers and employees, particularly on individual goals and training and development needs.

“This has all helped boost employee morale which, when combined with a greater understanding of their work responsibilities, contributes to improving service delivery to the community,” Samantha Riddle said.

The plan is then linked to greater levels of community satisfaction.
