Earth Carers educating the community

Earth Carers is a community education program that aims to improve community knowledge and skills in waste minimisation at Local Government level. The program has been introduced in Perth’s western suburbs by the Western Metropolitan Regional Council. This includes the councils of Subiaco, Cottesloe, Claremont, Peppermint Grove and Mosman Park. The City of Nedlands also participates in the program.

Most of these Councils have an active Earth Carers volunteer group. The volunteers develop their knowledge of waste management issues and are trained in practical skills, including composting, worm farming and improving recycling in the home.

Volunteers conduct education outreach activities such as workshops, demonstrations and displays to promote waste minimisation behaviours in their local communities. Earth Carers volunteers also work with schools and have recently assisted the Graylands Primary School community to commence worm farming and composting in the school grounds and to improve recycling at the school.

Earth Carers activities generally attract a lot of interest with many people responding to the opportunity to observe and learn about simple steps they can take towards living with less waste.
