Safeguards assets people, finances and property

Risk management is one of the key tools for any Local Government. It is an attempt to systematically devise, implement and improve risk management practices and decision making. The risk management objectives within North Sydney Council are to maintain the highest possible integrity in services provided by Council.

Risk Manager Colin Maher said the strategy also safeguarded assets, people, finances and property. “The aim is to create an environment where all employees assume responsibility for managing risk,” he said. “By doing so we can enhance Council’s ability to deliver policy and performance objectives in a timely, efficient and effective manner.”

Proper risk management can also ensure resources and operational capabilities are responsibly and efficiently deployed. To achieve these objectives, several policies and practices have been adopted by Council that reflect best practice and incorporate risk management principles.

“Services to the community are delivered on a priority basis according to the availability of resources, taking into account risk identification, risk exposure and risk treatment options,” Colin Maher said. “Employees have clear processes to follow and work can be scheduled on a logical, transparent and more effective basis.”

He said much of the conflict for employees in determining priorities is therefore removed. The reasons for particular decisions are clear, which leads to improved job satisfaction and greater community satisfaction. This strategy has also given North Sydney Council the opportunity to dovetail its risk management practices with statutory requirements, such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Civil Liability Amendment (Personal Responsibility) Act.
