An event featuring Tongan Dance Groups, the Maori Haka, Rhythm and Blues, funk and crew of hip hop rappers has been highly commended in the inaugural New South Wales Local Government Cultural Awards.
Administrator of Warringah, Dick Pearson, said the Council won the Cultural Projects award for Voices from Oceania, a free open air concert at Dee Why Beach. This features a multitude of music genres celebrating the unique, traditional and contemporary sounds of Warringah’s Pacific Islander culture.
“I am extremely pleased that Warringah Council has been recognised for holding such an important cultural event,” Dick Pearson said. “This inaugural award acknowledges the leadership role of Warringah Council in developing and undertaking Voices from Oceania.”
The concert, part of Harmony Day celebrations held around Australia, celebrated contemporary as well as traditional Pacific islander culture. The awards, staged by the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW and sponsored by Country Energy, were developed to acknowledge the leadership role Local Government has in cultural development.
