Staff education in KPIs at Holdfast Bay

Before undertaking a mid year review of its five year strategic plan, staff at Holdfast Bay Council in South Australia were trained in the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs are a valuable tool in all forms of strategic and corporate planning.

Acting Manager Strategy and Policy, Justin Hensgen, said the mid year review helped keep a strategic focus for the organisation.

The strategic plan needs to be reviewed every four or five years, however, Holdfast Bay decided on a mid term review as well.

Before implementing a review of strategic planning framework, it was essential to improve the knowledge of Strategic Plan linkages through out the organisation. Therefore, a staff education program to promote the plan and improve understanding of the purpose of KPIs was undertaken. Training comprised the forming, use and evaluation of indicators. The result has been an improved focus on objectives and financial management. Holdfast Bay has 32,000 residents and is located in Adelaide’s south.
