Cooperative approach improves road safety

Rural Local Governments, as a roads authority, face the risk of being sued each time a car crash occurs on the public road network. Creating a road safety partnership is the key aim of the Crash Investigation and Reporting Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) developed by Wollondilly Shire Council in New South Wales.

This is a joint project involving Council and the local police. The MoU is a key plank within Council’s Road Safety Strategic Plan. It establishes sound policy and work procedures for the organisation. It has enabled the police and Council work together to identify and address road safety engineering issues on the Wollondilly road network.

“Through the MoU, we can demonstrate innovation and continuous improvement in the area of road safety,” said David McTiernan, Manager Traffic and Forward Planning Branch. “With appropriate training and experience, an MoU can provide councils and the police with opportunities to examine a crash scene, use industry accepted audit processes and from this identify improvements to the road environment to the benefit of all road users.”
