New ALGA President defeated in local poll

At ALGA’s Annual General Meeting, following the National General Assembly on 10 November, then Darebin City Council Mayor, Rae Perry, was elected President of the Australian Local Government Association. On 26 November, in Victorian Council elections, Rae Perry failed to retain her Ward seat. She faced a field of 13 candidates.

Representing the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), Rae Parry was ALGA’s first female President, succeeding Councillor Mike Montgomery, who had stepped down after two years at the helm.

The Acting President of the Australian Local Government Association, Councillor Paul Bell, has conveyed ALGA’s commiserations and best wishes to Rae Perry.

“Rae had the full support of the ALGA Board and we were very much looking forward to her leadership of Local Government over the coming two years,” Cr Bell said. “She had already made a solid and impressive contribution during her time on the ALGA Board, particularly as chair of the committee reviewing the National General Assembly of Local Government.

“Rae has also worked closely with many Australian councils to help rebuild communities in East Timor.

“We knew Rae faced the polls at the time of her election as ALGA President. Of course, nothing is certain in politics, and we now wish Rae the very best for the future. She will undoubtedly continue to make a significant and important contribution to her community.”

The ALGA Board of Directors will now meet on 9 December to elect a new President for the remainder of the two year term.

At the 10 November AGM, Councillor Paul Bell, President of the Local Government Association of Queensland, was elected Vice President. With ALGA now having two Vice Presidents, Councillor Bill Mitchell, President of the Western Australian Local Government Association, was also elected to this position.
