Council lift pulse rate for Commonwealth Games

People may find their pulse is racing a little higher on November thanks to their local Councils. Local Governments in Victoria are being invited to lock Sunday 20 November 2005 into their diaries for a swim, walk, cycle or dance as part of an active countdown to the Commonwealth Games. Melbourne will host the games in 2006.

The Victorian Commonwealth Games Minister, Justin Madden, said he hoped communities across the State would unite on the day and raise their heart rate for the Games.

“As the Go For Your Life campaign demonstrates, the Bracks Government is working to make Victoria a healthier and more active place to be,” the Minister said. “The Games provide a great opportunity for people to channel their enthusiasm for a major sporting event into a more active lifestyle.

“Every municipality is encouraged to stage an event on 20 November – whether it’s a walk in the park or sports carnival for all ages and abilities. Hopefully, this single day of unified action will inspire more people to take up some sort of physical activity on a regular basis.”

Each of the State’s 79 local Councils has applied for funding to host activities on 20 November through the Victorian Government’s $4.5 million Getting Involved program, which is supporting Games celebrations at a local level.

Councils will host activities focusing on both older and younger people as well as people with a disability.
