Lots of people LEAPing

The City of Whittlesea’s seniors community is an extraordinarily active one, with dozens of seniors groups operating within the municipality. As well as the recreational opportunities offered by the groups themselves, Council has established the LEAP program for people aged over 55 years. LEAP stands for Let Everyone Actively Participate.

Each year more than 25 events are offered, providing opportunities to try new things, meet new people and keep active.

Acting Team Leader Aged and Disability Services, Wayne Mitchell, said the events range from leisurely luncheons and interesting bus trips to skiing and walking tours.

One recent initiative was the Seniors Multicultural Expo attended by hundreds of people from 25 different cultural backgrounds. It featured paintings by local artists, a multicultural fashion parade and discussion groups with school children, giving them the chance to meet with senior members of the community and learn about their migration experiences.

“LEAP is growing in popularity with about 2,500 people attending events each year,” Wayne Mitchell said. “It’s an important program because it encourages local residents to remain active and interested in life as they age by offering a wide range of affordable recreation opportunities.”
