Barossa to drain lake as part of major park upgrade

The Barossa Council in South Australia will drain the lake at Victoria Creek Park, Williamstown as the first step of a major upgrade program of the park. Barossa’s Chief Executive Officer, Judith Jones, said Council wanted to clean the lake of silt before the onset of winter and undertake remedial work on the existing retaining wall.

“Council has applied for funding from the State Government to undertake a complete redevelopment of Victoria Creek Park, including an elevated walkway over the dam, a new wharf and jetty area, a picnic ground with off road parking, a heritage walking trail, native plantings and improved lighting,” she said. “Longer term proposals include the construction of a new public toilet block.”

Judith Jones said the redevelopment of this community asset in Williamstown will improve recreation and leisure activities for local residents and tourists.

“It will make it more attractive for visitors to stop in Williamstown and use the services offered by local businesses,” she said.

In its previous life, the area was used as the local swimming pool. Initial work involved draining water from the lake by opening the weir gates. This allows the silt to dry for effective transportation off site. It is estimated that 700 to 800 tonnes of silt will be removed.

A rock retaining wall will be constructed using an excavator in the creek bed, as access to the area is limited. Fortunately the majority of be area is located on a solid rock creek bed which will enable earthmoving equipment to operate effectively.
