Adelaide City Council is taking a European approach to run the first Council operated bike hire program in Australia. Available in locations throughout the CBD, users will be able ride free for the first two hours.
Councillor Richard Hayward, who proposed the project, said Adelaide City Bikes offers a healthy and fun way for people to enjoy Adelaide at their own pace.
“This is an important initiative modelled on similar successful operations offered in several major cities in Europe that, like Adelaide, are conducive to cycling,” he said. “Bikes also come with a roadside assistance program. If you get a puncture, there will be a phone number you can call and someone from Council will be out to quickly fix your bike. It’s truly a hassle free system.”
Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the project would start with 40 bikes, accommodating riders big and small.
“As demand for the service increases, Council will increase the number of bikes on offer,” the Lord Mayor said. “Adelaide’s flat plains, wide streets and surrounding park lands makes it a great city to explore by bike.”
