When art worlds collide

Two prominent Western Australian artists, each with a distinctive creative style, came together for a unique community art makeover at the City of Gosnells Kenwick Youth Resource Centre. Established in the 1980s, the City’s urban art programme was the first of its kind in Australia.

Young members of the Kenwick Youth Resource Centre’s urban art programme seized the opportunity to learn more about the artists’ techniques.

The partnership of talent between Indigenous artist Arron Yarran and world leading urban artist AJ “Dash” created a dramatic effect with their design of two lizards ‘basking on the wall’ covering the Centre facade. Yarran used traditional techniques and Dreamtime images to bring her lizard to life, while Dash’s contemporary approach gave his lizard a funky, street wise edge.

Dash and Yarran, respected artists in their own right, have previously worked with young people in the City on other art projects, however this was the first time that the pair attempted a joint piece. Dash has worked on urban art projects in Perth, Melbourne, London, South East Asia and Western Australia’s north west. Yarran is currently working on several projects, including the formation of an art service for people with a disability and her own art mentoring programme.
