Wastewater for subsurface drip irrigation *

The focus on water management through efficient irrigation is increasing in proportion to the drought conditions being suffered nearly Australia wide. All instrumentalities have been charged with the challenge of trying desperately to provide green playing fields and reserves while being seen to save water.

Retrofitting existing water guzzling sprinkler systems with the far more efficient sub-surface drip irrigation systems is being considered by many but water, in most instances, still remains the problem.

The fact remains that many Councils and large schools are quite literally sitting on an enormous water resource in the form of wastewater which, when collected, can be directed through hazard free, maintenance free, sub-surface drip irrigation systems with complete confidence. When using sub-surface drip, the wastewater does not have to be treated to the same level as it would if sprinklers were chosen, thus providing a considerable cost saving.

Sub-surface drip, using wastewater, is generally accepted by both the EPA and Health Commission authorities.

Greene Eden Watering Systems have been installing sub-surface drip irrigation systems for well over ten years and, though located in South Australia, have installed systems Australia wide.

Most systems in recent years, though, are using the locally harnessed wastewater and were installed originally to save potable water resources. It seems that sub-surface drip systems using treated wastewater is now, and will be, the future focus for parks and gardens.

Arid land Councils, especially, are facing this issue head on – retrofitting existing irrigation systems with sub-surface and then ‘sewer mining’ to provide them with their water resource – what could be simpler and more environmentally-friendly?
