The City of Greater Dandenong is proud to be the most culturally diverse locality in Victoria and the second most diverse in Australia, with residents from 151 different birthplaces. Fifty-four per cent of our residents were born overseas, and 48 per cent in nations where English is not the main spoken language.
According to Community Services Director, June Dugina, each year more than 2,000 recently arrived migrants settle in Greater Dandenong, contributing to the emergence of communities from Sudan, Ethiopia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kenya and Egypt. Several of these groups have more than doubled in number during the past five years.
“We are all very proud that so many people, many from war torn countries, choose Greater Dandenong to call home,” June Dugina said. “Not only does this provide a culturally rich and diverse environment in which our community can thrive, it also provides a very strong multilingual base for international trade.”
