Buying Green – it’s so easy

Simple ways for people to consider the environment when purchasing goods and services were outlined at the recent Buying Green Conference. Hosted by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA), the third national Buying Green Conference was staged at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

It attracted over 100 delegates from all spheres of government and businesses from around Australia. Keynote speaker, Professor Ryoichi Yamamoto, outlined Japanese initiatives to encourage green practices as well as the work undertaken by the International Green Purchasing Network.

Delegates were encouraged to consider the real cost and environmental impact of their purchasing decisions, taking into account the full life of a product from the stage of its raw materials through manufacture, its useful life and eventual disposal. Sponsors Corporate Express, the Water Corporation and Alinta joined exhibitors in showcasing green products and services, offering delegates concrete examples of green purchasing options.

Case studies on successful strategies for buying green were presented by a range of industry representatives, suppliers and procurement experts.

Through their conference resolutions the delegates agreed to promote green purchasing throughout Australia, work together to prevent unnecessary duplication of resources and seek Federal Government support for an Australian Green Purchasing Network that could become a part of the International Green Purchasing Network.

WALGA President, Councillor Bill Mitchell, said the conference was a step in the right direction for sustainable communities.

“Environmental considerations in our purchasing practices and use of green products will help our businesses and communities both today and into the future,” Councillor Mitchell said. “With the research currently being undertaken around the world, green purchasing options are increasing in number and becoming more affordable, making it easier for us all to consider the environment in our purchasing decisions.”
