Spotlight on Greater Dandenong

In what is being hailed as the biggest rejuvenation effort undertaken in Victoria since the Docklands project, the State Government has pledged more than $290 million to upgrade central Dandenong. The announcement of an additional $197 million follows a $92 million funding package announced last year to rejuvenate the Dandenong CBD.

The Transit City initiative will include changed traffic conditions along Lonsdale Street making it more pedestrian friendly and improve the overall safety of the street. A new walk will be established linking Dandenong Station to Dandenong proper, and public spaces and city parks will be established.

Mayor, Peter Brown, described the announcement as spectacular.

“This is a fantastic show of support from the State Government for Dandenong and we thank them very much for what they continue to do for our city,” he said. “It is really our opportunity to shine and that’s exactly what we are going to do. The works will take years to complete but we are all part of the change process and all part of the rejuvenation process. It’s time we held our heads high and show the rest of the world how proud we all are of this wonderful city.”

Development Services Director, Mal Baker, said the community will be the beneficiaries of the latest funding announcement.

“Council, the executive team, the State Government and VicUrban will work together to implement these monumental changes that will take place and that can only be viewed as a positive partnership for the betterment of the entire community.”
