Supporting communities in a changing rural climate

The need to study the climatic change indicators, and adapt to new crops and technology, due to reduced water availability to 2010 and beyond, will be a key theme at the 62nd National Conference presented by the Murray Darling Association. This year’s conference will be held on 21-22 September at the Barham Services Club, Barham, New South Wales. The program will explore the long term effect on production changes and the socio economic effects of water trading across communities involved with the Murray-Darling Basin.

Interest and concern over climate change and water ownership is growing, particularly the impact of these two factors on agriculture and communities across the Murray-Darling Basin. Climate change and water ownership are set to have significant impacts on Local Government and rural communities and the conference aims to address these issues.

The 62nd National Conference will commence on the 20 September with a civic reception on the Wednesday evening. Other activities include the official dinner, the Annual General Meeting, a tour of the local area, a partners’ tour, and a post conference tour on Saturday.

Conference speakers include Sussan Ley MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Dr Wendy Craik, Chief Executive, Murray-Darling Basin Commission and Ken Matthews, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, National Water Commission.
