Located in western Melbourne, Wyndham City Council has received $300,000 from the Victorian Government to help fund the new $4.6 million Tarneit Community Centre. The State Government funding is a result of Council’s successful grant application through the Department of Victorian Communities ‘Building Stronger Communities’ grants program.
With the design stage expected to be completed in coming months, the Tarneit Community Centre will house two kindergartens, two maternal and child health centres, a community hall, community meeting space and staff offices. The design will also allow for a branch library and learning centre to be added in stage two of the project.
“This will provide the growing communities of Tarneit and Truganina with access to library services without having to travel into the CBD or neighbouring suburb, Hoppers Crossing,” said Council’s Buildings, Assets and Waste Manager, Tony Grech.
Wyndham Mayor, Councillor Shane Bourke, said the centre reflects Council’s proactive planning for the future needs of residents in Wyndham’s growth areas.
“Tarneit is one of the fastest growing communities in Wyndham, with its population expected to exceed 18,000 in the next ten years,” he said. “This is an increase of 285 per cent. The Tarneit Community Centre will provide essential services to residents in Wyndham’s north, in particular children’s services.
“By the end of 2006, it is expected that Tarneit will be home to 66 newborns. This figure is expected to exceed 293 by 2016, which represents a 344 per cent increase in births. The Tarneit Community Centre has been planned to cater for this expected growth, as well as service the needs of existing residents. At present, parents of newborns in Tarneit have to access Maternal and Child Health services in other areas of Wyndham. The construction of the Tarneit Community Centre will enable parents to access maternal and child health services in their own neighbourhood.”
The centre will be constructed in two stages. Stage one, will commence in January 2007, with stage two developments beginning in 2016.
