A new kerbside recycling program is set to kick off in Whyalla in coming months. The scheme will introduce a three bin pick up system, including general waste, recycling and green waste bins.
While the collection is currently being tendered, Project Manager, Greg Hill, said the recycling program will reduce Council’s contribution to landfill by up to one third of its current rate.
“Whyalla currently contributes 30,000 tonnes of waste to landfill per year,” he said. “By educating the community and ensuring they understand the system, we are confident we can reach our target.”
Greg Hill said that a new regional officer has been appointed to visit local schools and senior citizen facilities to educate them on the use of each bin.
Negotiations are also in place to see Whyalla’s landfill site become a transfer station.
“Waste would be left at the Whyalla site before being transferred to another regional centre,” Greg Hill said.
