Council will develop a large, centrally located area of vacant land into a sustainable ‘Eco-City’. After purchasing the land for a very fair price in 1997 when development was slow, Council came up with the idea of an eight star energy efficiency rating residential estate.
While the South Australian Government requires a five star rating, Whyalla’s Legends Estate has considerably lifted the bar, creating efficient housing, while remaining cost effective. Guidelines for the development include water recycling systems, solar hot water systems, and renewables, such as solar streetlights.
The estate has been divided into two key areas – a standard residential development and a retiree area, comprising smaller homes.
With a chain of sporting identities, such as AFL players and race car drivers coming from Whyalla, Council named the development the Legends Estate in hope of creating an association between being a legend and living in the City – ‘Come and live in Whyalla and you can be a legend too!’
With in detail plans now finalised, Council has recently attracted a developer to take on the project.
