2007 General Assembly in Darwin

Next year the National General Assembly on Local Government will be staged in Darwin from 26-29 November. In inviting delegates to the Northern Territory next year, Local Mayor of Darwin, Peter Adamson, said that it is anticipated that the General Assembly will be just as successful as in 2002 when Alice Springs hosted the event.

“Darwin has much in common with various Local Governments,” the Lord Mayor said. “We are a capital city, a medium sized provincial city and we are located in a remote region. A high proportion of our residents were born overseas or their parents were. We have many different nationalities living and working together.”

In line with Darwin’s relaxed tropical setting, Alderman Adamson said that ties and jackets can definitely be left at home.

Located on the doorstep of Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, he urged delegates to come early or stay on after the conference to share in the excitement of the city and numerous natural attributes of the Top End.
