Native Title Forum in Melbourne

On 7 December 2006, the Attorney-General announced four amendments to the Native Title Act. The Amendments focus on creating a more effective process for everyone in the Native Title system, and are deemed to support the wide intent of Native Title.

In response, The Negotiating Native Title Forum on 26-27 February at the Rendezvous Hotel in Melbourne will examine:

  • the amendments to the Native Title Act and a timeline for implementation
  • institutional policy and agreement making
  • the new powers and functions of the National Native Title Tribunal
  • the administrative, financial and legal burdens required for indigenous communities to enjoy their legal rights to land.

The forum boasts a distinguished panel of speakers, incorporating addresses and presentations from Philip Ruddock MP, Attorney-General; Brian Wyatt, Chair, National Native Title Council; Natalie Rotumah, Community Facilitator, NSW Native Title Services; Mishka Holt, Legal Officer, NSW Native Title Services; and a representative of the Yaegl People.

The program also boasts a panel of expert Native Title speakers including Graeme Neate, President, National Native Title Tribunal; Warren Mundine, National Senior President, ALP & CEO, NSW Native Title Services; Steven Marshall, Assistant Secretary, Legal Services and Native Title Division, Attorney-General’s Department; David Ritter, Lecturer in Law, University of WA; Chris Graham, Editor, National Indigenous Times and Shirley McPherson, Chairperson, Indigenous Land Corporation.
