Alert system connects the police with the local community

The City of Belmont and the Western Australia Police are working together through what is believed to be the first internet based crime prevention communication system. ‘BeCrimeAlert’ allows Western Australia Police to SMS, telephone, email and send regular mail to instantly communicate current threats and alerts to the community. It is thought to be unique to Belmont, but has been designed to expand to a national level.

BeCrimeAlert allows police to determine the importance of safety information. Where appropriate, this information can be quickly distributed to relevant registered members via a secure portal. Messages may include details about suspects police are looking for, current threats and other useful information. Residents register by visiting Council’s website and choosing their preferred method of receiving alerts.

Belmont Mayor, Glenys Godfrey, said the messaging system is a simple but effective way to keep the community informed.

“We believe BeCrimeAlert is empowering the community by giving them a safe and helpful way to assist police in keeping their community safe,” she said. “Belmont is proud to be a leader in crime prevention and creating safe communities. We have the full support of our local police and we are confident that BeCrimeAlert is effectively connecting Local Government, community members and the police for the benefit of the entire City.”

District Superintendent, Shayne Maines, said BeCrimeAlert adds value to local crime prevention initiatives.

“Belmont’s BeCrimeAlert system is a valuable addition to our collaborative approach to crime prevention,” he said. “Our officers are encouraged to use the system to communicate important safety matters with the community.”
