From dedicated green thumbs to gardening novices, the Laverton Community Garden is uniting residents from across Hobsons Bay. Located on the grounds of the Laverton Secondary College and McCormack Park and a key outcome of the Laverton Community Action Plan, the garden was created to not only learn about horticulture but to develop social networks and a sense of community.
Hobsons Bay City Council allocated over $20,000 to construct the garden, with the Victorian Department of Human Services contributing $9,000 to enable the garden to develop accessible features such as raised garden beds, and some concrete pathways.
The garden now comprises 19 low garden beds and six raised garden beds available for individuals or community groups to rent for six to 12 months. Laverton Secondary College currently maintains two of the garden beds. In addition to the garden beds, there are a number of communal beds for those who want to be involved but don’t want the responsibility of their own plot.
The Laverton Community Garden Committee will continue to make further improvements to the site in the coming years, including the construction of compost bins, a pergola, and the installation of seating and tables.
