Local students are working with Hobsons Bay City Council and Melbourne Water to undertake a water monitoring project of Cherry Lake in Altona. Throughout 2006, students from Altona, Seaholme, and Altona West Primary Schools, and Altona Secondary College conducted monthly tests on the lake’s turbidity, temperature, pH level, and a bug survey before presenting their findings at a Council Meeting in November 2006.
The project has given the students an insight into the significance of environmental monitoring, and also provided the Council with an objective study of the lake’s current state of health.
Council was so impressed with the group’s findings that it allocated $10,000 to further investigate the recommendations in conjunction with Melbourne Water.
