Radio irrigation helps conserve water

Dan Gleeson Gardens in Thuringowa now has a water wise radio irrigation system thanks to the Australian Government’s Community Water Grants.

Thuringowa City Council Environment and Community Services Chairperson, Councillor Jenny Lane, said the joint project involved the installation of an irrigation system designed to reduce water consumption and identify damage.

“The irrigation systems used to maintain Dan Gleeson Gardens are linked to a Remote Controlled Irrigation Network (RCIN), allowing personnel to manage the irrigation system from a personal computer,” Councillor Lane said. “A computerised radio controlled irrigation system maintains the grounds to an acceptable watering level without excess wastage. The system is also capable of detecting broken sprinkler heads and leaks and will automatically shut down if any are identified.”

Completed in May, the project is significantly reducing water usage in Dan Gleeson Gardens and helping to actively promote conservative water use throughout the community.

“This is just one of many ways we promote efficient water use to staff and residents,” Councillor Lane said.

The total project cost of $100,000 was equally funded by Council and through the Australian Government’s Community Water Grants. The Australian Government’s Community Water Grants are part of the $2 billion Australian Government Water Fund. It provides grants of up to $50,000 for community organisations to put in place practical, on the ground solutions to either help save, reuse or improve the health of local water sources.
