Tasmanian workshops in run up to elections

The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT), in conjunction with the Local Government Office and the Tasmanian Electoral Commission, recently held a series of free information seminars for people interested in standing at the next Local Government elections in October.

Association President, Councillor Mike Gaffney, said the workshops were well attended, indicating a strong interest in this year’s elections.

“We are keen to support this interest and the workshops provided a valuable opportunity for potential candidates to receive information about community expectations and the roles and responsibilities of becoming an elected member,” he said.

The workshops were held well in advance of the elections to ensure that individuals had ample time to consider the personal impact and time commitment, if successful. It also allows them time to attend local Council meetings, to discuss issues with community members and to approach current Councillors for advice.

“People need to be aware of the challenges and ramifications of joining Council,” President Gaffney said. “These workshops make people more aware of the commitment and process involved. They also provide an informal and non threatening environment for potential candidates to raise questions or issues they otherwise may not have had an opportunity to.”

At the workshops, LGAT CEO, Allan Garcia, discussed what it means to be a Councillor and the issues Councillors face. Director of the Local Government Office, Margueritte Scott, addressed legislation, roles and policy, while Rob Huskings, from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission, covered the submission process, paperwork and so forth. President Gaffney then responded to any questions about the election process or issues of concern.
