Jondaryan purchases Mobile Lip Ramp

Jondaryan Shire is the latest Council to purchase a Mobile Lip Ramp from Skateramps Australia.

Located on the Darling Downs of Queensland, Jondaryan covers more than 1,900 square kilometres and has a population of almost 14,000 people.

Council’s former Manager Environmental Services, Kevin Hay, said the new unit is perfect for servicing the Shire’s many small communities.

“It is quite common for children in smaller communities to not have access to any sporting equipment or they have to travel far to use sporting facilities,” he said. “A skateramp had been identified as needed in the community for a long time, but with amalgamations looming, we were unable to secure funding from the State Government to purchase one. The significant saving we were able to obtain by purchasing Skateramps Australia’s mobile ramp enabled Council to purchase the unit without State Government help, and its portability also means a greater number of young people can use it.”

Kevin Hay said the skate ramp was delivered late last year to coincide with ‘Streetwise’ – a four hour skateboarding coaching session teaching youth how to use their skateboarding equipment and how to use the ramp.

The ramp is now moved around the Shire every four weeks, ensuring all communities have a chance to use it.

Jondaryan is now in the process of amalgamating with seven other Councils, including Toowoomba City Council, to become the new Toowoomba Regional Council. Kevin Hay said the Mobile Funbox is sure to complement fixed structures in other Council areas and will also be readily available to service other small communities in the new Regional Council.
