Levy enables beautification works

Located on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Snowy River Shire recently commenced work on the first stage of the Jindabyne Beautification Program.

Characterised by rolling plains in the east and rugged mountain ranges in the west and south, the Shire is a year round holiday resort. Its township of Jindabyne is the main commercial centre for the southern Snowy Mountains resort area and its usual population of approximately 3,500 can easily climb to 20,000 during the snow season.

Council’s Acting Director Engineering and Operations, Rob Staples, said as the launching point to the snow fields, Council and the community felt it was important to improve the entry to Jindabyne to make it feel more welcoming and inviting.

“The beautification project is a long term project that has been in the works program for a number of years,” he said. “Over this time, Council has been accumulating funds through the Jindabyne Beautification Special Rate Levy.

“The levy is collected as part of the rating system from residents in Jindabyne and the surrounding district.”

Rob Staples said the first stage of the works program involves cutting back the embankment on both sides of the main road leading into the town, the construction of a pre-cast moulded concrete retaining wall and landscaping works. He said all aspects of the works will keep with Jindabyne’s natural beauty.

The total cost of this stage of the program is $180,000 and is due for completion prior to the snow season.
