Following the Local Government Association of Tasmania’s (LGAT) General Meeting in March, Tasmania’s Local Government sector will tackle the skills shortage issue head on.
Councils recognise the difficulty in recruiting and retaining skilled staff and agreed to the appointment of a Careers Officer to provide statewide support on this issue.
LGAT President, Mayor Mike Gaffney, said the skills shortage in Tasmania is a prevailing issue for Councils.
Mayors and General Managers felt that while LGAT had worked collaboratively with a range of organisations to help raise the profile of Local Government, it was a resource intensive exercise that was not sustainable under the current staffing structure.
“A centralised careers resource within the Association is a more sensible option than a piecemeal approach, with each Council devoting scarce resources to this purpose,” Mayor Gaffney said. “It will be an exciting role, responsible for developing a strategic focus on, and tools for, recruiting, retaining and upskilling staff in Local Government.”
The Careers Officer position will be advertised in coming weeks.
