Radical new road safety barrier launched*

Increased safety for motorists and road workers will become a reality with the recent launch of the BarrierGuard 800, a cutting edge barrier design set to revolutionise the road safety industry in Australia.

Marketed by Boylan Traffic Solutions, the prefabricated steel barrier works in two ways – by absorbing the impact of a crash, and by containing the vehicle – offering the driver a vastly increased chance of recovering control of the wheel.

BarrierGuard is the only temporary steel barrier in the world to meet the requirements of the high standard of NCHRP 350.

The new barrier will be launched in August by motorsport television commentator Neil Crompton, along with veteran performance car driver and BTS managing director, Peter Boylan.

Peter Boylan said crash tests overseas had produced some impressive results.

“In one test, a car was driven into the barrier at 110km/h, at a 20 degree angle of impact, and it was smoothly redirected,’’ Peter Boylan said.

“There was only a small amount of damage to the car and the barrier remained entirely serviceable.’’

The barrier’s flexible, steel design means it will contain a 7,500 kilogram truck
impacting at 45 degrees, at 50 kilometres per hour; and a 13,000
kilogram bus impacting at 20 degrees, at 70 kilometres per hour.

BarrierGuard 800 design features include:

  • crash dynamics of steel
    carry much lower occupant
    risk
  • more environmentally
    sensitive than plastic
    barriers that need
    filling with water
  • more efficient to transport
to and from the work site
  • quicker installation
  • approved by all Australian
    State Governments.
