APS Benefits to assist with education rebates*

Did you know that you can claim up to $750 in tax rebates per child on eligible education expenses? The rebate for children attending primary school can be up to $350 per child, while for a child attending secondary school, the rebate can be up to $750.

What can be claimed?

The following expenses are eligible expenses for the education rebate:

  • laptop computers
  • home computers and associated costs, such as repairs and running costs
  • printers and cartridge costs
  • USB and flash drives
  • home internet connections – usage related to learning only
  • computer software for educational use, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation and antivirus software
  • school textbooks and other paper based school learning materials,
    including stationery, glue, compasses, pencils and pens.

How do I claim the rebate?

The rebate can be claimed in your 2009 tax return. You need to keep valid receipts to be able to claim, so make sure that you obtain valid receipts, and if you purchase secondhand books or computers, ask for a written receipt detailing the date purchased, the seller, the goods purchased and the price paid.
