Employment Month

Local residents looking for work were able to meet prospective employers and find out how to get the job they want through a series of activities held during Employment Month in Auburn in May 2007.

A Job Pathways Expo, employment workshops and the Auburn Jobs Expo were organised by Auburn Council in partnership with the Auburn Employment Working Group.

Employment Month brings people looking for work in contact with a large number of employers, services and training organisations. Job seekers have the chance to get lots of information about careers, job search techniques and education and training options to increase their chances of being matched with the right job.

Free workshops and seminars were held right throughout the month, to assist people brush up on their job search techniques and find out how to improve their resume and successful interview skills. Job seekers were then able to put those skills to good use at the Jobs Expo when meeting prospective local employers.

Seminar topics included job sectors where there are skills shortages, traineeships and apprenticeships; identifying your skills and developing effective resumes, tailoring your resume and covering letter for a specific job; interview and presentation skills; working in Australia; and public sector recruitment.

A highlight of the month was the Jobs Expo, a large jobs fair which attracted thousands of job seekers and brought them together with businesses, recruitment specialists and government agencies.

The best thing about Employment Month was that it brought employers in contact with a large pool of enthusiastic local talent in one location, increasing the chances of finding the right candidate.

Businesses were also able to save time and money by recruiting and interviewing job candidates on the spot while local job seekers explored job opportunities and met different employers in a more relaxed and open environment.

The success of Employment Months was evident from the large numbers who attended: A total of 53 organisations and approximately 1,000 job seekers participated in one or more of the program activities, resulting in direct placements.
