Midnight basketball helps young people find their way

Physical activity and being part of a team is a powerful combination to make young people feel good about themselves. This can be especially beneficial when new to a country, its culture and its language.

To help young people who have recently arrived and who are from a refugee background, Council organised for teenagers aged between 12 and 16 years to take part in a midnight basketball tournament.

This innovative crime prevention project, undertaken by Council in partnership with Midnight Basketball, the Commonwealth Bank and local youth organisations, worked with young people to help them in their personal development.

The Midnight Basketball Program was run for 22 weeks and included eight workshops, 22 training sessions and 22 games.

This project provided participants with a regular activity on a Friday night, with proper supervision in a safe environment.

It was an effective strategy to engage these young people, providing them with positive role models and increasing their awareness of local community and youth services.

This successful program will run again this year.
