The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) will host the Local Government Planning for Communities in a Changing Climate Conference in Hobart on 25 and 26 March.
The Conference will bring together council officers, Councillors, government agencies, Natural Resource Management bodies, Catchment Management Authorities, universities and professionals to discuss land use planning systems and approaches to ecological sustainability in a changing climate.
Sessions will cover adaptive planning, reducing transport emissions, regional planning approaches and risk assessment and management in both non coastal and coastal areas.
Sessions will be followed by extended question time and panel discussion to allow participants to fully explore the material presented and its application to their specific circumstances.
Ian Barnes-Keoghan from the Bureau of Meteorology, Julie Davidson from the University of Tasmania and Anna Lyth from Rare Consulting will address adaptation issues in non coastal settlements specifically focusing on the impacts of climate change and vulnerabilities of these areas and adaptation needs.
Other speakers include:
- Barbara Norman from RMIT University whose research and
teaching interests include urban and regional planning, housing,
integrated coastal management and climate change
adaptation - Dr Anna Lyth from Rare Consulting who has expertise in
sustainable urban and regional development with a special
focus on climate change issues for urban places and the urban
transport sector - Associate Professor Tim Smith a former senior research
scientist with the Resource Futures Program of CSIRO
Sustainable Ecosystems and currently with the University of
the Sunshine Coast - Allen Kearns the Deputy Chief of CSIRO Sustainable
Ecosystems, based in Canberra, where he leads the Sustainable
Cities and Coasts Theme in CSIRO Climate Adaptation
Flagship.
Tasmanian specific projects, including the recently released Clarence Council Risk Assessment Project, the Department of Primary Industries and Water Climate Risk Assessment and Management Project and the Climate Futures Tasmania Infrastructure Project, will be presented.
