Adelaide City Council is constructing a new bicycle lane in one of its main streets – Sturt Street. The lane is similar to those common in Copenhagen, Denmark, where there is a strong cycling culture. It positions the bike lane between the footpath and on street parking.
Adelaide Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the lane will optimise the City’s cycling experience by offering better and safer cycling conditions.
“Two of Council’s most important strategic objectives are to create an accessible City with sustainable transport, and to deliver safe walking and cycling networks,” he said. “With increasing numbers of cyclists in the City, the Copenhagen style bike lane will help ensure the safety of cyclists and eliminate possible danger to pedestrians.
“Providing greater opportunities for cycling through the creation of more bike lanes means more people will choose to ride their bike to work or study in the City, which in turn means reduced carbon emissions and a greener City.”
The Copenhagen style bike lane is a key project in Council’s Bicycle Action Plan 2008–2011. This plan aims to encourage more people to ride bikes, and allows Council to broaden its commitment to tackling climate change and to offering sustainable transport options.
“Council will be looking for opportunities to create more of this style lane wherever we can, because the distinctive thing about it is that it separates cyclists not only from traffic but also pedestrians, so it’s safer for everyone,” Lord Mayor Harbison said.
