New city plan sets healthy goals for Logan

Logan City Council is demonstrating that public health is a number one priority with the establishment of a community health action plan.

Health and Regulatory Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Phil Pidgeon, said the Logan Healthy City Plan is the result of a five year strategy for health in Logan.

“Logan is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia and for that reason it is important to have a vision for enhancing the community’s wellbeing and quality of life,” he said.

“The area of public health is becoming increasingly complex and we need to be able to work in cooperation with a variety of stakeholders for the good of our residents.

“The Healthy Cities approach gives us a platform to achieve this, with a focus on healthy living, recreation, safe environments and partnerships with allied health service providers.”

Councillor Pidgeon said the plan will emphasise the link between a healthy environment and healthy people, and look at the implications of climate change.

“We all know about the importance of eating right and getting regular exercise, but there is now growing recognition of the connection between an unhealthy environment and illness,” he said.

“Climate change is also emerging as a major issue for public health, with increased risk of injuries due to heat or flooding, as well as the potential for a rise in infectious diseases.”

Councillor Pidgeon said the plan will follow on from the success of the Logan Public Health Plan, which resulted in a number of initiatives at Council, such as the development and implementation of the Logan Sharps Management Plan, the Eat Play Live Well Logan program, and a range of collaborative partnerships.

In 2007, Logan became a member of the Alliance for Healthy Cities, a World Health Organisation initiative.

It also cofounded the Australian Chapter of the Alliance for Healthy Cities.

The Logan Healthy City Plan will be managed by Council’s Service Delivery Coordination Team, comprising Councillor Pidgeon, Councillor Lisa Bradley, Council’s Environmental and Sustainability Branch, and other Council branches and external agencies.
