New Huon Valley pathway improves access to Franklin

Huon Valley Council recently completed stage three of a four phase project that will eventually result in a footpath snaking along the entire length of the thoroughfare in one of its townships.

Located in southern Tasmania, Franklin is a pretty riverside village with a reputation as one of Tasmania’s most attractive towns.

As distinctive as the river that Franklin overlooks, is the footpath that runs almost the entire length of the town’s main street.

In June, Council completed the installation of a 160 metre stretch of the path at a cost of $100,000.

The new section replaces an uneven concrete footpath that had been considered unsafe for elderly pedestrians who use the path regularly to walk into Franklin.

During construction, Council engineers also took the opportunity to include significant improvements to local stormwater drains, which are prone to flooding in times of heavy rain.

New drain pits and pipes were installed to alleviate the problem.

In addition, sloping nature strips fronting some properties were levelled and instant turf was laid to prevent the area from becoming a mud pit during heavy rain.
