Located 120 kilometres south of Sydney, Kiama Council recently opened a new section of the Kiama Coast Walk, providing the general public with access to previously unavailable coastline areas.
Linking Werri Lagoon in Gerringong and Loves Bay in Kiama, the six kilometre walk takes in some of the most spectacular scenery on the south coast of New South Wales.
Some 500 people attended the official opening in October and the Kiama Visitor Centre estimates that hundreds of people have completed the walk every weekend since.
“The new section of track provides over 18 kilometres of continuous walking along the Kiama Coast Walk, stretching from the Minnamurra River to Werri Lagoon,” said Mayor Sandra McCarthy.
“This exciting event comes after more than a decade of campaigning by Kiama Council to open up this section of Kiama coastline to the public.”
Featuring unique geological formations, including rocky bays, headlands and rock platforms, the Kiama Coast Walk is expected to become one of Australia’s most popular coastal walks. Kiama Tourism Manager, Nicole Smithers, said tourists visit the Kiama region because of its many areas of natural beauty.
“The new walking track will undoubtedly encourage more visitors to the area, which is great for local businesses and jobs,” Nicole Smithers said.
The track caters to walkers of moderate fitness.
