Self drive experience links visitors with World Heritage area

The Greater Blue Mountains Drive (GBMD) is an award winning ‘self drive’ experience that links visitors with the spectacular natural attractions within the World Heritage Area and other complementary experiences in the region.

An initiative of Blue Mountains Tourism Limited, the GBMD was awarded ‘Gold’ in the category of New Tourism Development in both the New South Wales Tourism Awards 2008 and the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards 2008.

GBMD also achieved Finalist status in the category of Community Service in the Local Government Managers Association (NSW) Management Excellence Awards 2008 for the excellent cooperation received across many LGAs, state agencies and the Commonwealth.

Due to the success of the project, a pilot program for the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon areas of the GBMD was successfully negotiated with Tourism New South Wales.

The program involves an innovative bundling of GPS and mobile phone technology and will be a market leading point of difference for visitors to the region. This technology will enable an unprecedented level of interaction and interpretation.

The GBMD Touring Guide and maps are available for sale at Visitor Information Centres throughout the Greater Blue Mountains region.

In addition, the website, GreaterBlueMountainsDrive.com.au features downloadable maps for Discovery Trails, GPS waypoints, geo referenced attractions, links to the websites of BMTL members and much more.
