Fast, reliable and cost effective telecommunications*

A fast and effective telecommunications system is a vital part of any local council’s infrastructure, providing connectivity between council offices and local facilities, including libraries and council depots; enabling voice and internet connection; as well as the transfer of data between council sites. There are three key factors that need to be considered and met to successfully roll out a new system.

  • Speed – most applications on today’s networks require a
    minimum throughput of 100 Mbit/sec to provide a response
    time acceptable to users. This should be achieved both within
    head office and from local facilities such as libraries, depots
    and child care centres.
  • Reliability – links connecting local facilities back to head office
    need to provide the very highest practical availability if customer
    expectations for the delivery of voice and data are to be met.
  • Cost – the NPV of any single link over the life of the link should
    be minimised. Options to decrease recurring costs by increasing
    capital costs should be considered.
