Youth Activities engage future leaders

Burwood Council hosts a detailed program of creative, social and fun activities, engaging younger residents on issues and solutions for the local community.

Youth Central is a weekly program that provides a fun, creative place for school age children to hang out after school.

Held in Burwood’s PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) and staffed by qualified youth workers, the program provides facilities for participants, including computers, games, a pool table, air hockey, table tennis, a chill out lounge and more.

Girls Space is another weekly program for females aged 12 to 18 years. This program provides the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends and have fun.

Some of the activities include acting, dancing, jewellery making, watching films, playing sport and painting.

Council recognises that its youth are its future leaders and has formed a youth group giving them the opportunity to discuss issues that affect them and to have input into Council decisions.

The Burwood Youth Action Group develops leadership, event management, promotion design, public speaking, decision making and advocacy skills.

The group is aimed towards people aged 12 to 24 years who live, work or study in Burwood.

For the younger ones, Council also runs a fun outdoor playgroup, which meets twice a week in Burwood’s parks.

Mobile Playvan is a vehicle packed with toys for kids aged 0 to 6 to enjoy and learn from.

The van parks in a shaded area and qualified staff are on hand to help supervise the children and have a chat with the parents.
