Ranger mountain bike patrols improving local law enforcement in Manly

Manly Council rangers patrolling both on and off the streets on mountain bikes are becoming a familiar sight in Sydney’s popular beach resort area.

In June, two regular ranger bicycle patrols commenced in the Manly area to improve local law enforcement.

“The manoeuvrability of bicycles in Manly’s busy streets and their ability to navigate narrow, crowded shared space areas, such as plazas and driveways, offer distinct advantages over more conventional law enforcement vehicles,” said Manly Mayor Jean Hay.

Bicycles can be issued to rangers to improve both the mobility and scope of foot patrols and are seen as potentially effective law enforcement tools when used in densely populated urban areas.

Manly is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, hosting millions of visitors each year at its surfing beaches, harbourside promenades, central business areas and nearby national parks and walking trails.

“The use of bicycles instead of cars can make rangers more approachable and accessible to people, especially in low crime areas or areas with high pedestrian use,” said Councillor Hay. “The bikes are nearly silent in operation and are a more environmentally friendly option, especially around sensitive natural heritage areas like our Scenic Walkway.”

Council has developed special procedures, practices and work processes for its ranger bicycle patrol officers to minimise bicycle patrol injuries. These include obligatory bike safety training, high visibility uniforms and safety helmets. Rangers are also issued with sunscreen, gloves and sunglasses.

The new ranger bicycles are specially designed for law enforcement use and feature light emitting diode (LED) lighting.
