Warm water pool making waves

Knox City Council in Melbourne’s southeast is literally making a splash, officially opening its long awaited warm water pool.

Located at the Knox Leisureworks facility in Boronia, the pool was officially opened on 21 May by Mayor Joe Cossari; Victorian Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, James Merlino; and Senator for Victoria, Jacinta Collins.

Mayor Cossari said that with strong community support behind the project and many long term advocates, the warm water pool is set to become one of Knox’s key health and recreation facilities.

“The project has become more than just delivering a warm water pool — it’s about delivering a more integrated, improved and accessible facility,” he said.

“It’s been a long time coming, but for Knox’s many residents who have been looking forward to their own local warm water pool, it’s great that it’s finally here.”

The warm water pool is heated at 34 degrees and includes ramp access, purpose built changerooms and a multipurpose room.

Councillor Peter Cole said it is the definition of a community facility.

“Council has listened to the community, we’ve planned and we’ve delivered,” he said.

“This is a first class water recreation and rehabilitation facility, delivered with the financial support of the Federal and Victorian Governments.

“It’s going to serve the needs of many people across Knox, both individuals and those participating in health support groups.

“As well as casual use, the pool is also available to several local and regional health groups supporting people with specific rehabilitation needs.

“Leisureworks manager, YMCA, is also offering a versatile aquatic program, suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

“Previously, residents had been travelling as far as 10 kilometres to Ringwood to access a facility there. Now they’ve got one right here in Knox and it’s great news for local residents.”

The Knox Leisureworks Warm Water Pool also looks like becoming Australia’s most energy efficient retrofitted aquatic centre.

An Australian first solar heating system, passive lighting, double window glazing and insulation — all means that energy use in the centre is expected to be cut by up to 50 per cent.

Water recycling and conservation systems will also cut water use by up to 40 per cent.
