Northern Tasmanian Mayors are united in their support for Tasmania’s home of AFL, Aurora Stadium.
Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten said games played at Aurora Stadium bring particular economic benefits to northern Tasmania.
“Thousands of people travel from across the country to watch the games and then stay on to travel around our beautiful State,” he said.
“Many councils report flow on effects, both before and after the matches, particularly in the tourism and business sectors.
“It’s important that we focus on one AFL venue for our State and build that up to a 25,000 seat capacity.
“The Aurora Stadium Redevelopment will increase seating capacity to 14,000 people with a venue capacity of 20,000 spectators.
“Increasing the capacity means we can host more games and also attract higher profile games, which will enhance the economic benefit to Tasmania.”
West Tamar Mayor Barry Easther believes the redevelopment will further cement Aurora Stadium’s position as Tasmania’s premier AFL ground.
“At all times when discussions take place between the Tasmanian Government and any AFL club seeking to play games in Tasmania, the Northern Mayors expect the Government to advise them that the home of AFL football in Tasmania is Aurora Stadium.”
