Pedicabs are set to return to the main streets of Port Douglas after a decade long hiatus.
Cairns Regional Council Mayor Val Schier said the bicycle powered rickshaws will operate in a similar way to taxis, with customers being able to flag them down on main streets.
“The pedicabs will be a safe fun way to travel but will be restricted to lower flow traffic areas,” the Mayor said. “Operators and passengers will be required to wear helmets.”
Each pedal powered vehicle will carry appropriate front and rear lighting to assure visibility, and hours of operation will be restricted to no later than 10pm. Councillor Julia Leu said the reintroduction of pedicabs will bring quirkiness and colour to the distinct culture of this popular far north Queensland town.
“Port Douglas has an ever increasing wedding market appeal, and this is another novel form of transport for newlyweds and tourists,” Councillor Leu said. “Council has approved a permit for a six month trial. Port Douglas has been home to a very successful rickshaw business in the past and the new operators should enjoy the same success.”
