Dubbo City Council promotes safer driving

Dubbo City Council has developed a ‘Work on driving safely education kit’ to help local organisations educate their staff about safe driving on the job.

It was developed with support from the Western Region Road Transport Authority and the Greater Western Area Health Service.

The kit is glove box sized and comprises:

  • a fact sheet about drink
    driving, fatigue, speeding
    and mobile use in the
    vehicles
  • a Powerpoint presentation
    file for HR managers and
    trainers to present to their
    staff, which also includes
    a quiz
  • information for truck
    drivers in the country on
    dealing with animals, stock
    and kangaroos
  • information on getting to
    know your vehicle
  • a safe driving pledge.

An e-learning process has also been introduced to keep participants up to date with best practices and changes to requirements, as well as regular reviews of damage costs and injury consequences.

Dubbo City Council Road Safety Officer Kristine Long said the program focuses on strong areas of driver safety, and has received great feedback.

“The kit gives the driver a lot of information about fatigue and speeding – issues that new drivers, or people that don’t drive a lot may not have previously considered,” she said.

“The kit will also educate staff about travelling long distances, particularly for those that aren’t used to it.”

To date, the kit has been distributed to around 20 organisations.
