Launceston Aquatic improves access

Residents with additional needs will be able to access Launceston Aquatic’s facilities more quickly and
safely following the donation of an additional submersible wheelchair.

The wheelchair, worth $1,800, was donated by the Rotary Club of Youngtown. It is fully submersible and enables people to use the ramp to enter the facility’s Programs Pool and Spa.

“It’s essential that Launceston Aquatic’s facilities are accessible to all,” said Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten.

“It was something we considered greatly while designing
the facility.

“The centre has accessible change facilities and wheelchair access. It also has one submersible wheelchair, which is frequently used, especially by people recovering from surgery.

“This second wheelchair will mean people won’t have to wait when they need to get in or out of the water, which is fantastic.”

Youngtown Rotary Club President Ian Smith said the club looks for projects that will be beneficial to the Launceston community, and then uses the money it raises to help fund those projects.

“Many groups and individuals need to use a submersible wheelchair to enter the water and this additional wheelchair will enable more people to be able to do that,” he said.
