Fairfield lights up to help the environment

In a first for Fairfield City Council, nine solar powered pedestrian lights have been installed at Bibby’s Place in the suburb of Bonnyrigg.

Located southwest of Sydney, Fairfield covers 102 square kilometres and has a population of 194,500 people.

The lights, which were created, designed and assembled by Council staff, provide the City’s very first solar powered pedestrian lighting. In one year, they will save up to 300 kilowatts of energy compared to regular lighting.

“The installation of the solar powered pedestrian lights is about saving money, meeting our community’s expectations and helping the environment,” said Fairfield City Mayor Nick Lalich.
“This is a great opportunity for Council to investigate even more ways of reducing our electricity costs and consumption of non renewable energy sources.”

The lights were temporarily installed at Bibby’s Place for the month of September – the month of Ramadan.

“This was the perfect location to start using them,” Mayor Lalich said. “Bibby’s Place is one of the world’s most unique streets. With so many cultural institutions in one street, it attracts crowds at all hours of the day. The lights helped to ensure that this street was not only kept alive with social activity when the sun set, and also provided a safe environment for our community.

“As the lights are portable, Council will be able to provide a timely response to community need by installing them in areas where residents have expressed the need for lighting.

“Without committing to permanent resources at a great cost, Council can assess whether permanent street lighting should be installed in various areas.

“The lights will also be used for various events throughout the City, such as the upcoming Cabramatta Moon Festival.”
